Berlin, June 2, 2024 – The Women’s Sailing Champions League, held in Berlin from May 31 to June 2, 2024, was once again a great success. Twenty-five all-women teams from 13 nations participated, including teams from Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Spain, the Netherlands, and Norway.
The Wannsee showed its usual character this weekend: shifting wind directions with speeds of up to 20 knots, early summer temperatures reaching 22 degrees, accompanied by rain and thunderstorms. Due to a lack of wind, no races took place on Friday.. In the evening, the teams listened to an inspiring talk by British professional sailor Annie Lush, who shared her experiences from the Ocean Race.
None of the teams dominated from the start, and the races were extremely close at all times, with every last centimeter being fought, which kept the competition at a very high level throughout. Each team had its own challenges with the conditions on the Wannsee, which kept the tension high until the very end. On the second day of sailing, Saturday, the Australian team Derwent Sailing Squadron proved to be very strong, while by the end of the day a Scandinavian tendency for the podium was already emerging. The Swedish team Royal Swedish Yacht Club and the Danish team Aarhus Sejlklub were battling it out for first place.
Anke Nowak, Managing Director of the SAILING Champions League GmbH, is proud of the format’s development in recent years: “It is fantastic to see how women’s sailing continues to grow. The best women’s sailing clubs in the world are participating. The Women’s Sailing Champions League promotes exchange and creates new communities in sailing across national borders.”
The Final Four consisted of the Royal Swedish Yacht Club from Sweden, Aarhus Sejlklub from Denmark, the Munich Yacht Club from Germany, and the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein from Germany. It was a thrilling Final Four. The Norddeutscher Regatta Verein fought their way into the finals on the last day. In the first round, they won against their three competitors, but in the second round, Aarhus Sejlklub prevailed, securing the title of Women’s Sailing Champions League 2024. Sailing holds a high status in Denmark, and the teams there compete at the highest level.
Team Salt also sails at the top of the Danish sailing league for mixed teams, consistently delivering strong performances. This result is a great recognition for the Danish WOW environment.
