The aim of Women On Water Hungary is to promote sailing among women.
In co-operation with an international organization Hungarian female sailors have founded a new community: the mission of Women On Water Hungary include the participation and acceptance of women in sailing, promote sailing as a recreational activity among women and to motivate girls and women of all ages to enter the sport.
The participation of women in both competitive and recreational sailing has been receiving a growing attention internationally. World Sailing published its global report in Dec 2019 about the role of women in sailing: they found that let alone the Olympic Games the number of female sailors is slightly over 10% in all the major regattas in the world (RORC Caribbean 600, 52 Super Series, Rolex Fastnet, Transat Jacques Vabre, Route du Rhum). The situation is similar in Hungary: according to the Hungarian Sailing Association out of the 4 000 registered sailors hardly every tenth is a female.
This is what the newly established community is determined to change: WOW Hungary would like to provide female sailors with a platform that allows them to share their stories, supports them through education, opens new opportunities to participate in racing and also encourages sailing for leisure. The international background helps manifesting successful foreign ideas and practices, integrating the Hungarian community, exchanging experience, boosting Hungarian participation in international regattas and inviting foreign female racers to Hungarian regattas.
On the blog of Women On Water Hungary members of the community will be presented among the Hungarian female sailor role models and a diverse range of topics is planned to be covered both on the national and international level. WOW Hungary is also present online on facebook and instagram, and will be organizing various events with special attention on the first official Hungarian regatta for female-only teams.
‘In WOW we were very happy to hear that the foundation of the Hungarian community will now a dedicated member of the WOW Family. After a very fruitful dialog and discussing about the concept, we were sure that the Hungarian initiative has an absolute place among the international WOW network. I am convinced that the programs manifested on the short and long run will develop an active, cooperative and organically growing national community. WOW’s goal is to get more female sailor out on the water and engage attention to women in sailing not only on the national level but all-around Europe. WOW aims to motivate women to gather in similar communities, just like in Hungary. The launch of the community in a new country is always exciting for us, we support the Hungarian founders greatly’ – said Nynne Desirée Ammundsen, the founder of the Danish WOW community and the brand manager of the Danish Sailing League.
